The Guyana Nurses Association, formed June 1928, is the oldest Nurses Association in the English speaking Caribbean. Dr. J. B. Singh OBE, a leading medical practitioner in the colony of British Guiana, played a pivotal role in its formation.

THE GENERAL NURSING COUNCIL (GNC) OF GUYANA WAS ESTABLISHED ON MARCH 26, 1954.
IT IS A SEMI-AUTONOMOUS BODY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REGULATION OF STANDARDS FOR NURSING EDUCATION AND PRACTICE IN GUYANA.
NURSES, MIDWIVES AND NURSING ASSISTANTS MUST BE REGISTERED WITH THE GNC BEFORE THEY CAN PRACTICE IN GUYANA.
